HMRC introduces digital authentication system

In an update for users of HMRC online services, the department has announced a transition towards a new digital authentication system.

From May 2024, new taxpayers without a Government Gateway account will be required to sign up for a GOV.UK One Login account to access HMRC's online offerings. This move aims to streamline the login process across various Government services, leveraging a more modern approach to digital identity verification.

GOV.UK One Login, which was initially trialled with HMRC staff in February, promises a simplified sign-in experience using just an email address and password. This system is designed to offer enhanced identity verification methods compared to the current Government Gateway, marking a significant step forward in securing and facilitating user access to Government services.

For now, the update primarily affects new individual taxpayers. HMRC advises agents and existing Government Gateway users to continue with their current login method, with plans to migrate these users to GOV.UK One Login at a later date.

The transition underscores HMRC's commitment to adopting technology solutions that improve accessibility and security for its digital services.
